Taxes

The fact is that our government has a deficit. There are many things we need our government to do, and all of it costs money. To say we're going to do these things and then underfund them is negligent. That strategy has long been part of the conservative attempt to derail the federal government.

I admired McCain for standing up to Bush about cutting taxes on the wealthiest Americans when we can't afford that. I admired McCain for refusing to make the tax cuts permanent. I admired McCain for leaving open the door to raising taxes when it's needed. But McCain is going further and further right in his run for the presidency. Today, he has taken the "no new taxes" pledge that is the conservative mantra.

Obama apparently saw it the same I did. In response to this news, Obama said, "I admired Senator McCain when he stood up and said that it offended his conscience to support the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy in a time of war. But somewhere along the road to the Republican nomination, the Straight Talk Express lost its wheels, because now he's all for those same tax cuts."
We have to elect Obama, and we have to stop stupidly saying we want government services without paying for them. That doesn't mean we should give the government a blank check. They have to be watched, because Lord knows they'll find ways to waste money. But to insist on spending money while insisting on not raising money is the road to ruin.

Yes, it seems McCain is moving over more and more……… And because even many conservatives are fed up, he started out saying what he needed to say in order to get enough people's attention, but we'll see as the days and weeks go by that he'll move right back over--as (and IF) his position solidifies--and soon he'll be harping on the same, tired conservative themes…

I saw Sicko on Olav’s suggestion. It was great. Yes, it made me sick. What’s more is the media really took the bait. I don’t want to give Moore too much credit, because the film really is one-sided, but the media lit into it and attacked it, and I think that’s exactly what Moore wanted. It’s more publicity, and the vehement attack does raise questions in people’s minds—why is the media attacking this so intently? Gee, IT MUST BE TRUE! Otherwise, the media wouldn’t pay any attention to it. Good Job, Michael.

…Oh, it was also such a nice touch in the beginning, with Bush saying how bad off doctors in the US are, and how gynecologists are prevented from sharing their love with their patients... It’s far, far beyond pathetic. His incompetence is a total and complete embarrassment—the mortification and the shame are at intolerable levels for me. I just want the guy out of the spotlight.

And I’ll make a prediction—right here, on this blog (and on mine)—February 17, 2008--you watch what happens to him after he’s out of office. He will fade into nothingness. Either that, or he’ll continue to struggle in vain trying to justify himself. What he WON’T do is anything notable or worthwhile.
