George W. Bush has vetoed legislation that explicitly makes water-boarding illegal. It's already illegal, of course, but Congress was trying to make sure that George Bush and his criminal administration knew that it was. I am ashamed of him as the supposed "leader" of this country. I am ashamed of all the Republicans who support him. They're not part of the America that I was raised to believe in. At least the next president will reverse this immoral behavior. Even Senator McCain, Republican that he is, is against torture. Besides being inhumane, torture has been proven to be ineffective in intelligence gathering. An excerpt from the Washington Post follows:

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Harry E. Soyster, a former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, suggested that those who support harsh methods simply lack experience and do not know what they are talking about. "If they think these methods work, they're woefully misinformed," Soyster said at a news briefing called in anticipation of the veto. "Torture is counterproductive on all fronts. It produces bad intelligence. It ruins the subject, makes them useless for further interrogation. And it damages our credibility around the world."

I don’t know why you’re worried. The bill is only trying to safeguard, in the President’s words, “one of the most valuable tools in the war on terror” and allows specially trained people to use “specialized interrogation procedures to question a small number of the most dangerous terrorists under careful supervision.” Further, these techniques are “safe and lawful.” Do you want Americans to die? The President said, “If we were to shut down this program and restrict the CIA to methods in the Field Manual, we could lose vital information from senior al Qaida terrorists, and that could cost American lives.” Believe me, you can trust that the highly trained and knowledgeable military will use these specialized techniques only against the worst terrorists and only under very careful supervision, just as President Bush says. Has he ever lied before? Never. Have military personnel, themselves stressed to the maximum psychological breaking point because of having to commit terrible atrocities in order to stay alive in the middle of a war zone, ever overstepped their bounds? Never. So, don’t worry, let the veto go ahead, and we’ll just trust the administration and the military will do the right thing, which is to only hurt the bad guys. Of course, hurt ‘em real good.
